Ff88® Product Application Downloads

Ff88® is designed for interior use.
For exterior use, Ff88® must be top-coated with Firefree Exterior (FfE) acrylic topcoat, which has passed the ASTM D2898 weatherization test. Substituting FfE or improper application voids any warranties.

Surface Preparation: All substrates must be clean, dry, and free of contaminants. Metal surfaces require priming. Concrete and cement-based materials should be primed with high pH-compatible primers. Glossy or dense surfaces may need etching or a latex primer. Moisture content in wood should not exceed 12%.

Application Conditions: Apply when ambient and surface temperatures are between 50°F (10°C) and 95°F (35°C), avoiding conditions with relative humidity above 75% or imminent moisture exposure. Full curing may take up to 30 days, with drying times per coat varying based on environmental factors.

Application Methods: Ff88® can be applied using an airless sprayer (recommended), roller, or brush without thinning. Wet film thickness (WFT) must be monitored using a wet film gauge to achieve the specified dry film thickness (DFT). Multiple coats should be applied only after preceding coats are thoroughly dry.

Inspection: A third-party inspection by a certified agency is required to verify proper application and uniform thickness, ensuring compliance with life safety standards.

Finishing: Ff88® is supplied in white with a flat finish and can be tinted (maximum 8 oz tint per gallon) or top-coated with premium latex paints for desired color and finish. For exterior applications, only FfE topcoat is approved to go over the Ff88.

Maintenance: Protect coated surfaces from damage; any compromised areas should be repaired and recoated to the original DFT to maintain fire resistance ratings.

Benefits of Our Firefree 88® Coating

Cost-Efficient

Firefree 88® is cost efficient: due to its superior fire-resistant performance, users need only a relatively thin layer of FF88. As a result, FF88 provides significant material and labor cost reductions. Compared to other options, savings of 30 to 70 percent and above are in reach in situations such as retrofit and historical upgrades, defective construction, new construction, or transportation.

High Performance

FF88 is the first fire-resistant coating to bring a true fire barrier to a wide variety of materials and assemblies. FF88 has been proven to withstand temperatures of up to 2000° Fahrenheit for up to two hours. As a result, FF88 provides a high level of fire protection which assists in (i) containing the fire to its room of origin, (ii) limiting smoke propagation, and (iii) preserving structural integrity.

Fully Tested and Certified

Ff88® has been tested to multiple standards worldwide, including ASTM E119 (1 and 2 hours), FM 4975, FM 4470, ASTM E 662-97, ASTM E 3675-98, ASTM E 162-98, ASTM E 1354-94, ASTM E 814, ASTM E84, Room Corner Test including UBC 8-2, NFPA 286, UBC 26-3 (Part 1 of FM Class 4880), BS 476 in England, AS 1530.3, 1530.4, in Australia, EN 13501 in Poland, and SISIR door test standards in Singapore. Ff88 is listed and labeled by FM Approvals, listed and inspected by ICC, classified by UL, and accepted by NY MEA.

Usable on Substrates & Assemblies

As a two-hour-rated intumescent paint, FF88 can be applied to most substrates used in the construction and transportation industries, including wood, gypsum board (sheetrock, plasterboard), lathe and plaster, concrete, masonry, embossed/pressed metal tin, thin-gauge metal, galvanized steel, aluminum, spray polyurethane foam (SPF), fiberglass, carbon fiber, plastics, and other composite materials. FF88 can be used in exterior applications if covered by the Firefree Exterior ("FfE") Topcoat .

Easy to Use and Apply

Firefree 88 is easy to use. FF88 is a high-quality, nontoxic, water-based resistant (matte) paint with a smooth architectural-grade finish (white, flat), excellent adhesion, and durability. FF88 is easy to apply by brush, roller, or sprayer. In most cases, FF88 will be self-priming, thus resulting in additional cost savings. Our fire-resistant paint is nontoxic and low-odor, and it may be tinted.

Eco-Friendly and Sustainable

Our products are safe and eco-friendly. Our fire-resistant coatings have low VOCs (<36gr/liter), which is extremely low compared to the current EFP regulations of 250gr/liter (per ASTM 3960). It is even significantly below California’s limit of 50gr/liter. This rating confirms their functionality as nonflammable, nontoxic, and environmentally friendly protective products. Additionally, Firefree 88 qualifies for LEED v4, is Green Categorized under FM Approvals, and meets Green Standards Performance under MPI GPS-01 and GPS-02.
