If you have any questions before, during, or after applying the exterior intumescent coating that is not covered in the application instructions, please contact support@firefree.com. Provide detailed information and documentation regarding your questions.

Application Instructions

FfE is a high-quality, 100% acrylic exterior coating that is applied just like any other exterior paint. The application of this exterior fire retardant coating system provides a protective barrier against flames, enhancing safety. However, it is important to follow the specific thickness guidelines to ensure it works effectively in the Firefree Exterior System. You can apply FfE using a brush, roller, or an airless spray gun. Thanks to its high solids content, it offers excellent coverage and spread rate. For detailed application instructions and recommendations on what equipment to use, please refer to the FfE Application Instructions.

Firefree Exterior System Technical

Our Firefree Exterior System is specially designed for exterior durability and protection of your assets. Our advanced formula requires application in two coats, with each coat having a dry film thickness of 3 mils, culminating in a total thickness of 6 mils once dry.

Additionally, the coverage efficiency of our FF Exterior Topcoat is engineered to provide comprehensive coverage. When applied in the specified two coats, it provides an application rate of 110 square feet per gallon (approximately 2.70 square meters per liter). This makes it an economical choice for large-scale projects, ensuring both cost-effectiveness and extensive surface coverage without compromising on quality.

This dual-coat system not only enhances fire safety but also ensures longevity and durability, safeguarding your investments in exterior applications. Our product's technical specifications are designed to meet the rigorous demands of modern building standards, making the FF Exterior Topcoat an ideal solution for enhancing the safety and resilience of your building exteriors.

Safety Instructions to Follow

At Firefree Coatings, Inc., we are excited to offer our FF Exterior Topcoat, a well-known fire resistant exterior coating, for your property. This product is non-flammable, although we recommend keeping closed containers away from extreme heat to avoid any risk of explosion.

Safety is a top priority for us, and we emphasize that our FfE System can cause mild irritation if it comes into contact with eyes, skin, or if inhaled or ingested. We are committed to the well-being of our customers, so we recommend immediate steps such as rinsing the eyes with water, washing the skin thoroughly, and consulting a medical professional if symptoms continue or if ingestion occurs. Our product contains titanium dioxide and mica—ingredients that require careful handling to avoid inhalation issues. At Firefree Coatings, Inc., we strive to ensure that our products adhere to the highest standards of safety and quality for our esteemed customers

Benefits of Our Firefree Exterior System

Enhanced Durability

FfE is a high-quality, 100% acrylic topcoat explicitly designed to protect buildings in exterior settings by enhancing the durability of intumescent coatings against harsh weather conditions. This topcoat fire retardant paint has passed weatherization tests, ensuring that structures remain safeguarded against UV radiation and moisture.

Compliance & Safety

FfE meets a variety of environmental and safety standards, including compliance with SCAQMD, CARB, and LEED V3 guidelines. This low-VOC (<50g/L) formulation underlines the product's commitment to environmental stewardship while maintaining high performance in diverse applications.

Versatility in Application

The Firefree Exterior Topcoat is designed for easy application and is compatible with brushing, rolling, or spraying techniques. The formulation of this fire retardant paint allows for a smooth application process akin to that of premium exterior latex paints, although with specific thickness requirements essential for achieving optimal fire retardant performance.

Warranty & Assurance

Like other Firefree products, this exterior fire retardant coating also offers a ten-year limited warranty, covering potential issues such as cracking, peeling, or chipping, provided it is applied correctly and maintained as per the guidelines. This warranty underscores the manufacturer’s confidence in the product’s performance and durability over time.

Excellent Color Retention

Our FfE system has excellent adhesion properties and color retention, ensuring that the aesthetic appearance of the coated surfaces remains consistent over time despite exposure to sunlight and environmental elements. This feature is precious for maintaining the visual appeal of exterior surfaces.

Application Capability

The fire barrier paint product is uniquely formulated to be applied exclusively over the Ff88 and FFA at temperatures above 50F (10C), to improve the durability of FF88 and FFA if used in exterior applications and in strict compliance with the manufacturer’s instructions and applies the recommended thickness.

What People Ask Us?

The key features of FfE include:
  • High-quality acrylic resin that provides excellent adhesion and color retention.
  • Easy application, environmentally friendly, and low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) under 50g/L.
  • Exceptional moisture resistance and UV protection make it suitable for harsh outdoor conditions.
  • It can be top-coated with exterior latex paints if a different color or finish is desired.
  • This fire retardant paint product must be applied at a dry film thickness of 6 mils and comes in white and deep base with a satin finish.
To ensure optimal performance, Firefree Exterior Topcoat should be applied following specific guidelines:
  • The substrate should already be coated with Firefree Class A or Firefree 88 to the recommended thickness.
  • FfE should be applied to a dry film thickness of 6 mils, typically requiring two coats of 3 mils each.
  • The application can be done using standard techniques such as brushing, rolling, or spraying with an airless spray gun.
  • The application must adhere to the recommended thickness and over the specified Firefree intumescent coatings to maintain the effectiveness of the fire protection system.
  • Proper preparation of the surface and following the specific application instructions provided by Firefree Coatings are essential to achieve the best results.
The limitations of a Firefree Exterior Topcoat warranty include the following:
  • If the product fails to perform as specified, it will be replaced at no charge, but this does not cover labor costs or any other incidental expenses.
  • To qualify for warranty claims, the product must be applied in strict compliance with the application instructions, and any claims must be reported within 10 days of defect discovery.
  • The warranty will be void if the product is altered, improperly stored, mixed with other products, not applied in the required thickness, or used beyond two years from the purchase date.
  • Documentation such as proof of purchase, compliance with application instructions, and evidence of the defect are required for a warranty claim.
Firefree Exterior Topcoat needs to be stored at temperatures between 50°F and 85°F (10°C to 29°C) to maintain its effectiveness and shelf life, which is two years from the date of manufacture. It is crucial to keep the product in these conditions in its original unopened containers to avoid any degradation of quality. The product must not be exposed to freezing temperatures or placed continuously under direct sunlight.
Due to the life safety implications of the Firefree Exterior System, all applied surfaces must undergo a third-party inspection. This inspection should be carried out by an ICC-ES certified professional or a Firefree QA/QC qualified inspector to confirm that the coating has been applied correctly in the required uniform thickness. It's the responsibility of the contractor or customer to hire an independent inspector to perform this evaluation. This ensures that the application meets all safety and performance standards, providing reliable protection in fire scenarios.
