Wildfire System Technical

The Firefree Exterior System is engineered to provide superior wildfire protection in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), complying with all ASTM fire and weatherization standards as outlined in the California Building Code Section 704A. The system involves a 2-step application process, beginning with the Firefree Coating (FfA), which must be applied in 2-coats, each with a thickness of 10 mils dry, resulting in a total thickness of 20 mils. This coating covers approximately 53 square feet per gallon.

The second step involves applying the Firefree Exterior Coating (FfE) over the FfA layer. FfE also requires two coats, each with a thickness of 3 mils dry, totaling 6 mils dry thickness and providing coverage of 110 square feet per gallon. If a different color finish is desired, the Firefree Exterior System can be top-coated with the most premium paints. For large orders exceeding 200 gallons, custom tinting by Firefree Coatings is available. In addition to the Firefree Exterior System, Vulcan Vents are recommended for enhancing fire protection. These vents are designed to self-close in the event of wildfires, providing an extra layer of defense against fire and embers.

It's important to note that while the Firefree Exterior System is tested and certified to retard fire spread, it does not guarantee complete fire prevention. The effectiveness of the system depends on proper application, the conditions of the assembly, and the nature of the fire itself. Users must ensure that the coatings are applied correctly and maintained in good condition to maximize their protective properties.

Overview of Firefree Wildfire System

This intumescent fireproofing system comes in two parts: Firefree Class A ("FfA") and Firefree Exterior Topcoat ("FfE"). FfA makes surfaces resistant to catching fire, while FfE protects FfA from weather damage. You can use the Firefree System on walls, eaves, and other parts of buildings to make them more resistant to wildfires. Besides being fire-resistant, this coating also helps protect against heat and embers carried by the wind. The Firefree Wildfire System has been tested and meets the standards set by the International Code Council (ICC) and the California Building Standards Code. This wildfire paint has proven to resist fire ignition and withstand weathering, making buildings safer in wildfire-prone areas.

Benefits of Our Firefree Wildfire System

Fire Ignition Resistant

Our Firefree Wildfire System is an intumescent fireproofing coating that meets fire safety standards. It's tested under ASTM E2768 for ignition resistance. These tests measure how well a product can slow down flames and reduce smoke.

Weather Resistant

The Firefree Wildfire System has passed the stringent ASTM D2898 method B for weatherization, undergoing extensive testing for water and UV exposures. This makes it an ideal choice for exterior applications, offering robust passive fire protection (PFP) coating.

Easy to Use & Cost-Effective

Our safe and high-quality outdoor fire rated paints for wood are easy to use and have higher durability. They can be applied with a roller, sprayer, or brush and often don't need a primer. They're a cost-effective way to meet fire and weatherization standards and can help lower insurance rates.

Fully-Tested to WUI Standards

Our Firefree System passed severe weatherization exposure tests, followed by severe fire tests, showing that it retains fire ignition resistance after long-term weather exposure. These tests were validated by IAS and CalFire Accredited Fire Testing Laboratories and listed by ICC-ES.

High-Quality Exterior Finish

Our Firefree Wildfire intumescent fireproofing coatings include an exterior fire stain-resistant prime & a durable white, satin finish. You can use Ffe as a topcoat with the most premium paints to get the color and finish you want. For large orders (>200 gallons), FfE can be tinted by Firefree Coatings.

Environmentally Friendly

Our eco-friendly fire-retardant paint exterior products are not only safe to use but also environmentally conscious. With very low VOCs—well below current EPA regulations and California's stringent limits—our Firefree Class A paint qualifies for LEED v4 certification.

For other products that can also help with improving the fire protection of a structure exposed to wildfires and bushfires, please check out the Vulcan Vents at https://www.vulcanvent.com.

Vulcan Vents are fire and ember safe vents designed to self close when exposed to wildfires.

What People Ask Us?

The Firefree Wildfire System is a revolutionary fire retardant paint system designed to protect homes and buildings from wildfires. It consists of a base coat, a top coat, and an optional sealer. The intumescent fireproofing system is applied to exterior surfaces such as wood, siding, eaves, and decks, forming a protective barrier that helps prevent ignition and slows the spread of flames.
The Firefree Wildfire System works by creating a fire-retardant barrier on the surface of the treated material. The base coat contains special fire-retardant additives that help prevent ignition, while the top coat provides additional protection and aesthetic appeal. The system is designed to withstand high heat and flames, giving homeowners and building occupants valuable time to evacuate safely.
Yes, the Firefree Wildfire System is highly effective in protecting homes and buildings from wildfires. It has been tested and certified to meet the highest industry standards for fire resistance. When properly applied, the system can significantly reduce the risk of fire damage and increase the chances of a structure surviving a wildfire.
The Firefree Wildfire System is designed to provide long-lasting protection against wildfires. The exact lifespan of the system can vary depending on factors such as weather exposure and surface conditions. However, under normal conditions, the system can last for several years before needing to be reapplied. Regular maintenance and inspections ensure that the system remains effective over time.
